Starcraft 2 features the following gameplay:
- Campaign Mode:
- Exciting Plot Experience: the game is divided into three parts, Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, and Legacy of the Void, each of which has an independent plot. Players can follow the perspectives of the protagonists, such as Jim Raynor, Kerrigan, and Atanis, to experience the stories of the three major races of humans, xenomorphs, and star spirits, and to feel the conflicts, betrayals, redemption, and sacrifices in the interstellar universe. For example, in Wings of Liberty, players will control the Rangers led by Jim Raynor to rebel against the rule of Arcturus Monsk and pursue alien artefacts; in Heart of the Swarm, witness Kerrigan’s re-transformation from a human back to the Queen of Blades and take revenge on Monsk; and Legacy of the Void revolves around the Star Spirit Archbishop Athanasius, who leads his people in recapturing his homeland of Aiel and confronting the fallen Sarnagaeumon.
- Branching Plot Choices: There are a number of branching plots during the course of the campaign, and the player’s choices will affect subsequent game content and plot development, increasing the game’s playability and replay value. For example, in some missions, players can choose different strategies or courses of action, which may lead to different results and changes in subsequent missions.
- Multiplayer versus mode:
- Racial Characteristics and Strategic Diversity: There are three races to choose from in the game, each with unique troop types, buildings, technologies and tactical styles. Human units are more balanced, with powerful mechanical troops and defensive facilities, good at positional warfare and war of attrition, for example, tanks can provide powerful long-range firepower output in the racked state, but poor mobility; Star Spirit’s troop types have powerful skills and shields, and more advanced technology, emphasising cooperation and synergy between troop types, such as the high-level Templar’s Spiritual Storms which can inflict great damage on dense enemy troops; Alien Bug’s troop types are numerous, and their technology is more advanced. The soldiers of Xenomorphs are numerous, with fast reproduction speed and high mobility, and are good at fast attack and harassment, like the puppies (jumping bugs) with low cost and fast production speed, which can quickly form a numerical advantage over the enemy in the early stage.
- Highly Competitive: Multiplayer battle is one of the core gameplay of StarCraft 2, which is highly competitive. Players need to quickly develop the economy, build buildings, train troops, and use a variety of tactics and strategies to defeat their opponents in the game. This not only tests players’ operational speed and precision, but also their strategic thinking, resilience and psychological quality. There are StarCraft 2 professional leagues and amateur tournaments all over the world, attracting a large number of players to participate.
- Cooperative mode:
- Commander System: Players can team up with other players to fight against the computer AI. Each commander has unique skills, troop types and upgrade routes, and players need to formulate strategies based on the commander’s characteristics and the co-operation of their teammates. For example, Reno can summon mining mules to gather resources quickly and has powerful biochemical troops; Kerrigan can upgrade himself and his bug troops through evolution, with powerful melee and raid abilities.
- Weekly Mutant Missions: Weekly Mutant Missions with special rules and challenges will be launched, and these missions will include various mutation factors, such as enemy invisibility, special damage zones appearing on the map, and enemy units possessing special skills, etc., which increase the difficulty and diversity of the game. Completing the weekly mutation missions can earn you a generous bonus experience and raise your player’s proficiency level.
- Custom Game:
- MAP EDITOR: Players can use the powerful map editor to create their own game maps and gameplay. The map editor is feature-rich and allows players to customise terrain, unit attributes, game rules, etc. to create a variety of interesting game modes, such as tower defence, survival, role-playing and more. Players can also share the maps they have created with other players, enriching the content and gameplay of the game.
- Casual gameplay: In addition to the more competitive battle modes, there are also some casual gameplay modes in custom games, such as ‘Desert Storm’. These games are usually simple and fast-paced, and are suitable for players to play during their leisure time.
