Recommended order of games in the Fallout series

Here is a sort of recommended play order for the Fallout series of games:

  1. Fallout 2:
    • These two are the opening titles of the entire series, developed by Black Isle Studios. They set the worldview, style, and basic gameplay of the Fallout series. The games are top-down, pseudo-3D, open-world CRPGs with a rich plot and side quests full of dark humour. While the graphics and gameplay may be a bit old-fashioned for today’s players, it gives you insight into the origins and early setting of the Fallout world, and provides a solid foundation for understanding subsequent titles.
  2. Fallout 3:
    • The first instalment in the Fallout series since Bethesda Studios took over the franchise, transforming the game into a 3D open-world RPG-FPS game. Set in Washington, D.C., the protagonist is a young loner who leaves Shelter 101 and embarks on a journey through the capital’s wasteland. The game has a huge open world map of the wasteland, inherited the skill tree, Perk additions and other characteristics of the gameplay, at the time to bring players a new visual experience and gameplay experience, but the main process is relatively short and biased linear, the ending is also relatively single.
  3. Fallout: New Vegas:
    • Produced by Obsidian Entertainment, with Bethesda providing the engine and source material. Arguably one of the pinnacles of the Fallout series, it excels in terms of plot depth, quest diversity, and characterisation. Set in the Mojave Wasteland, the game allows the player to decide the fate of the city of New Vegas by choosing different factions, and its choices and consequences mechanic is extremely well-designed, allowing every decision the player makes to have a significant impact on the game world.
  4. Fallout 4:
    • Another masterpiece from Bethesda Studios, it is one of the latest mainline entries in the series (as of 2024). The game has been further improved in terms of graphics and operation, with new features such as a build mode. The player takes on the role of a character who leaves the shelter after a nuclear explosion and embarks on an adventure through the Boston area in search of his son. This one is rich in gameplay with plenty of side quests and explorable areas, and there are plenty of modules to further enhance the experience.
  5. Fallout 76:
    • This is an online multiplayer game with an emphasis on open-world survival, crafting, and base building. Players can explore, co-operate or compete with other players in the wasteland world. The game had some problems in the early days of its release, but with constant updates and improvements, it has amassed a certain fan base. If you enjoy online multiplayer and interacting with other players, then try this game after experiencing the previous single-player titles.
  6. Fallout Shelter and other spin-offs:
    • Fallout Shelter is a strategy management game in which players need to manage their shelters, deploying resources, arranging personnel, and so on. If you want to experience the worldview of Fallout in your fragmented time, or are interested in management games, you can try this game. There are also spin-offs such as Fallout: Shelter Online, which differ from Fallout Shelter in terms of gameplay but are based on the worldview of Fallout.
