The Fallout series is a very classic role-playing game series with the following characteristics:
- Background setting:
- Post-nuclear war world: the game is set in the post-nuclear war world, where the earth’s surface has suffered severe radiation pollution, the ecosystem has been destroyed, and most of the human race is dead or mutated. Players will embark on an adventure in such a barren and dangerous world.
- Sanctuary System: Before the war, the U.S. government built a large number of radiation shelters, each of which had its own unique design and experimental purpose. Some of the shelter residents came out of the shelters after the war and began to explore and survive in the wasteland, facing various dangers and challenges while trying to rebuild civilisation.
- Gameplay:
- High Freedom Exploration: the game offers a vast open world where players can freely explore various locations, including abandoned cities, military bases, underground bunkers, and more. During exploration, players can discover various missions, hidden items and story clues.
- Quests and Plot Choices: The game has a wealth of main and side quests, and the player’s choices will affect the development and ending of the plot. For example, in Fallout: New Vegas, players can choose to join different forces, each of which has its own unique goals and values, and the player’s choices will determine the fate of New Vegas.
- Combat System:
- Diverse Weapons: Players can fight with a variety of weapons, including firearms, melee weapons, and energy weapons. Different weapons have different characteristics and damage types, so players can choose the right weapon according to their preferences and combat needs.
- Special Abilities and Skills: Characters have a variety of special abilities and skills, such as sneaking, hacking, and medicine. These abilities can be upgraded by upgrading and learning skill books, giving players an edge in combat and exploration.
- V.A.T.S. System (Shelter Technology Assisted Targeting System): This is a special combat system in the Fallout series, where players can pause time in the middle of a battle to access the V.A.T.S. system and select enemy body parts to attack, with each part having a different hit rate and damage. This way of fighting increases the strategy and fun of the battle.
- Characters and camps:
- Multiple Character Races: There are different races in the game such as humans, ghouls (humans mutated by radiation), mutants, etc. for players to choose or encounter. Each race has its own unique appearance, attributes and backstory.
- Rich camp forces: There are several camp forces in the game, such as the Brotherhood of Steel (dedicated to collecting technology and maintaining order), Inklings (advocating for the preservation of purebred humans and the elimination of non-purebred humans), and the New California Republic (aiming to revive human civilisation). Players can choose to join a particular camp or manoeuvre between different camps, using their resources and power to achieve their goals.
- Game series entries:
- Fallout: the first generation of the series, released in 1997, was groundbreaking in presenting players with a post-nuclear-war wasteland world, but may be relatively ancient in terms of operation and graphics for modern players.
- Fallout 2: Released in 1998, it inherited the worldview and gameplay of the first generation and added some new elements and plots, making the game more playable.
- Fallout 3: the first Fallout title made by Bethesda, set in Washington, D.C., featuring more modern action combat and RPG mechanics, with much improved graphics and sound.
- Fallout: New Vegas: Rich in plot, with an emphasis on choices and consequences, players can decide the direction of the game by choosing different factions, and is considered by many players to be a classic of the Fallout series.
- Fallout 4: released in 2015, players will take on the role of a survivor who wakes up from a shelter to rebuild his home and explore the wasteland world. The game adds a building system that allows players to build their own shelters and bases.
- Fallout 76: released in 2018, is an online multiplayer game that allows players to survive and explore the wasteland world with other players, cooperatively or competitively.
- Fallout: Strategy Edition – Brotherhood of Steel: a strategy game in which players will command members of the Brotherhood of Steel in battles and quests, with a different gameplay from other Fallout games.
